Self custodial wallet rejected the demand of the Canadian justice court order and claimed that they are only service providers and they can’t do anything.
In the present time, many people are protesting against the Canadian government under the Freedom Convoy 2022 campaign. Protestors were collecting funds through traditional fundraising platforms but later due to pressure from government authorities in Canada, they revoked by the support of such paltforms. Later Protestors took the support of crypto assets-based crowdfunding platforms and now Protestors are directly moving to accept Bitcoin payments against such restrictions.
The government of Canada is trying its best to seize the funding and support for the Protestors in any way of possible methods. Recently the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered a self-custodial Bitcoin wallet “Nunchuk” to give details on the fund transactions related to the Convoy freedom fighter and also to freeze the funds.
In response, Nunchuk clearly stated that they are only self-custodial Bitcoin software service providers to the users, where users can manage their funds in their ways with the option of Multi-sigs systems. Further added:
“We do not collect any user identification information beyond email addresses. We also do not hold any keys. Therefore, we cannot ‘freeze’ our users’ assets. We cannot ‘prevent’ them from being moved. We do not know of ‘the existence, nature, value, and location’ of our users’ assets. This by design.”
Recently Kraken CEO also clearly stated that they also can be ordered to freeze the funds of Canadian users. Kraken CEO said that people are suggested to keep the funds from the exchange to non-custodial crypto wallets.
