ESET antivirus researchers claimed that they found a fake crypto wallet Trezor app on Google Play Store on 23 May.
The malicious Android App on Play Store is Trezor name but comes from a different developer than the Trezor Manager App. Trezor is a hardware wallet used to store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
The Play Store app page looks legitimate, all the information about Trezor wallet is added but the research firm said that the app not contain any branding from Trezor and will be used to steal the user’s login credentials.
According to ESET, more than 1,000 users have downloaded the fake app. The app claimed to create users to create a wallet and use them for transactions, hackers can change the address in the app to steal user funds.
ESET further explains:
“If bitcoin continues its growth trend, we can expect more cryptocurrency scam apps to emerge in the official Android app store and elsewhere.”
Crypto users only use the apps that are linked on the official website of a wallet and need to think twice before entering the personal information in any third party app.
Trezor said that the app is no harm for the users, however, the research firm believes that data collected by the app can be used for further phishing attacks in future. Hence Google Play Store removes the app.
There are many fake and scam apps available on the internet, users should avoid clicking on malicious links and enter any data on untrusted websites.
