Raul Jordan, the editor of Prismatic Labs said that the rumors of the Medalla test network’s death are greatly exaggerated, adding that the mishap was noted, and will not cause a delay in the release of ETH 2.0.
Testnet, the Ethereum blockchain test system, came to a complete halt on August 14 when a bug took most of its validators offline. The official report into the Prysmatic incident states that the auditor falsely suggested a blocking certificate for a future slot. While the system responded to correct the discrepancy, one of the six servers specified time, date, day, and future as “future,” causing the server to be wrong for four hours.
The bug affected all those who use the majority of Prysm clients, a majority, but not all, the official report said.
The result of the error was that internal auditors destroyed the data,
“Jordan said in a new blog post. Supporters of rival networks have claimed the outage is the best thing to happen to the test network, as a landline incident would be catastrophic if it were real money. The Bitcoin SV blog CoinGeek reported that this could prove a significant disaster if Ethereum 2.0 is not ready to launch. We can expect a substantial delay in the introduction of ETH 2. Such a delay would be a significant problem not only for the Ethereum network, which is struggling with congestion and record-high charges but also for Ethereum itself.
The Medalla incident adds many new items to this list, and we believe that the expected launch target for ETH2.0 is still the ideal timeframe, but there will be a free checklist of requirements for its launch. We now know that a large number of users on a network with different time zones is a security risk, so from now on we would only rely on system time, “he said.
This is not a problem, because prismatic has given users the possibility to turn off their system, he explained, noting that dynamically adjusting the time to the server’s response is a beautiful thing and not necessary or problematic.
Thus saying:
“We believe the expected launch target of 2 to 3 months from Medalla genesis is still an ideal timeline. There will be a public checklist of requirements for an ETH2 launch, and this Medalla incident will definitely add a lot of new items to the list regarding client resilience, security, and proper release.”
