Pro-Crypto Teresa Goody Guillén is a New Candidate for the Role of SEC Chairman

Teresa Goody Guillén has joined the list of candidates vying for the position of chairman at the U.S. securities regulatory body.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is the primary financial regulatory authority, tasked with overseeing business activities related to securities. Using traditional securities laws, the SEC has also taken enforcement actions against the crypto sector. Under the current SEC Chairman, Gary Gensler, the agency has filed lawsuits against multiple crypto companies for conducting crypto trading operations.

On 20 Nov 2024, Coindesk reported that the Trump transition team is considering Teresa Goody Guillén, a partner at the law firm BakerHostetler and co-lead of its blockchain team, as a potential candidate for the SEC chair role.

The report, based on information from insiders and industry sources, highlighted Goody Guillén’s credentials as a seasoned securities lawyer with experience both serving the SEC and representing blockchain companies and traditional businesses in opposition to the agency.

A crypto token project founder expressed optimism, stating that Teresa Goody Guillén could bring significant changes to the crypto sector’s regulatory environment under her leadership at the SEC.Previously, two other leading candidates were speculated to be in the running for the SEC chair position: SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, famously known as “Crypto Mom,” and Chris Giancarlo, popularly referred to as “Crypto Dad.” Both are well-recognized figures in crypto space.

Trump Administration Hiring Crypto-Friendly Leaders

The newly elected U.S. President, Donald Trump, is actively considering the appointment of pro-crypto leaders for key positions in his administration. In the latest update, Trump is reportedly planning to nominate Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick as Secretary of Commerce. Lutnick is a vocal supporter of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. His company has been a long-term partner of Tether (USDT), a leading stablecoin, helping manage its reserves.
